The annual interred Prisoner of War (POW) Ceremony honors the 26 German and 3 Italian soldiers that died in captivity in the southeast US during World War II. These soldiers are from several POW camps that were located throughout the southern United States and only four of the interred perished at Fort McClellan. After the war, the others were collected and reinterred in this cemetery with full military honors. Both Germany and Italy have national observances, similar to the American Memorial Day, that are conducted in November as a commemoration for members of the armed forces and civilians who died in armed conflicts. Military representatives from the US, Germany and Italy attend and present wreaths. Last year, we had three family members of the interred that attended the ceremony from Germany.
