Join us for a presentation by Don Smith, recognizing the 75th Anniversary of the Berlin Airlift:

Tuesday, November 7, 2023
4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The airlift started in June of 1948 and ended in May of 1949.  Much has been written and said about the American efforts in the Berlin Airlift.  Don Smith, author of Steinstuecken: A Little Pocket of Freedom will talk about the German (and especially West Berlin) contribution to the Western Allies’ efforts to break the Berlin Blockade.  What specific challenges did the people of West Berlin face, and how did they overcome those challenges?  What kinds of threats did West Berliners face from the Soviet forces that surrounded their city?  What did they do to help make the Airlift a success?  Who were the West Berlin heroes of the Airlift crisis?  This presentation will cover all those topics.

Annual Fort McClellan German-Italian POW Cemetery Ceremony @ POW Cemetery
Nov 19 @ 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm

The annual interred Prisoner of War (POW) Ceremony honors the 26 German and 3 Italian soldiers that died in captivity in the southeast US during World War II.  These soldiers are from several POW camps that were located throughout the southern United States and only four of the interred perished at Fort McClellan.  After the war, the others were collected and reinterred in this cemetery with full military honors.  Both Germany and Italy have national observances, similar to the American Memorial Day, that are conducted in November as a commemoration for members of the armed forces and civilians who died in armed conflicts.  Military representatives from the US, Germany and Italy attend and present wreaths.  Last year, we had three family members of the interred that attended the ceremony from Germany.
