How German as a Second Language can advance your career @ Yellowhammer Room at the Gorgas Library

Please join MLC at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and the German Program for a talk with Joseph Lulka who will share how learning a language helped him advance his career.

Joseph Lulka is an engineer at Mercedes-Benz U.S. International (MBUSI) in Vance. He currently works as a Buildability Engineer in MBUSI’s SUV factory, performing root cause analysis to resolve issues affecting vehicles’ quality.

He is Chair of the Alabama Germany Partnership’s Young Professional Group, which organizes social and professional events to showcase German industry in the state and cultivate cultural understanding between Germans and Alabamians.

Joseph received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alabama and learned German through an exchange at the Hochschule Esslingen in Germany. He is also fluent in French, having attended high school at the Lycée Pérochon in France.

2024 Annual Memorial Observance at the German and Italian Enemy Prisoner of War (EPW) Cemetery @ German and Italian Enemy Prisoner of War (EPW) Cemetery

The annual interred Prisoner of War (POW) Ceremony at the EPW Cemetery on the former Fort McClellan is scheduled for November 17, 2024 at 1:30 pm. It honors the 26 German and 3 Italian soldiers who died in captivity during World War II. These soldiers are from several POW camps that were located throughout the southern United States and only four of the interred perished at Fort McClellan. After the war, the others were collected and reinterred in this cemetery with full military honors.

A ‘no-host’ reception will be held at the Cane Creek Golf Course Grill, 66 Galloway Gate Road, Anniston, AL 36205 following the ceremony.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day: “Sweet Noise: Love in Wartime” with Max Hirshfeld @ Homewood Public Library

To commemorate the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, join the Alabama Holocaust Education Center as we welcome Max Hirshfeld at our 2025 International Holocaust Remembrance Day program. A renowned photographer and son of Holocaust survivors, Hirshfeld will discuss his book “Sweet Noise: Love in Wartime” which chronicles his parent’s experiences in Auschwitz and their remarkable story of love during the Holocaust. Hirshfeld will share photographs of his mother’s first return to Poland after forty-six years along with impressions of growing up under the shadow of the Holocaust, as well as letters his parents wrote to each other during a lengthy, post-war separation.

This event will be held at the Homewood Public Library on January 23rd, 2025, from 6:00-7:30pm. While this event is free, registration is required. Register today.

AGP 27th Annual Celebration Dinner @ Bryant-Denny Stadium

Keynote by the German Ambassador to the United States Andreas Michaelis.

We celebrate 27 years of dedication to developing educational, cultural, and business relationships among individuals, organizations, and companies with ties to both Alabama and Germany.
