Join our hands-on class and master the art of pretzel making!
Twist, knead, and bake your way to the perfect pretzel under guidance from Rolf Meyer, the owner of the German restaurant, Rolf’s Café & Bistro, in Tuscaloosa.
German soft pretzels trace their roots back to the early Middle Ages. Legend credits Christian monks with inventing the twisted knot to resemble arms folded in prayer or to symbolize the Holy Trinity.
German and Swiss immigrants brought their recipes to North America in the 1700s and 1800s. These immigrants—known as the Pennsylvania Dutch—helped popularize both soft and hard pretzels. Now it is time to try Rolf’s recipe!

Pina [2011]: Tuesday August 11th
Experience one of the most stunning, emotionally resonant visual love letters to modern dance ever put on film. Directed by Wim Wenders, it acts as a tribute to the legendary German choreographer Pina Bausch, who tragically passed away just as filming began. Bausch’s Tanztheater (dance-theater) style discarded traditional ballet steps for frantic, repetitive, and deeply human gestures that express grief, desire, and alienation. Pina is an incredibly accessible film even for those who claim to know nothing about contemporary dance, and captures the full spectrum of the human experience.

Goodnight Mommy (Ich seh, Ich seh) [2014]: Tuesday October 12th
A masterclass in slow-burn, psychological tension. This Austrian thriller is a chilling, artfully crafted descent into madness and grief that brilliantly flips the script on who the “monster” really is.The film follows two twin boys who welcome their mother home after reconstructive facial surgery. With her head wrapped in bandages and her demeanor suddenly cold and distant, the boys grow deeply suspicious that she is an imposter.

Das Boot [1981]: Tuesday November 10th
Widely considered the greatest submarine film ever made, Das Boot offers an agonizingly realistic, claustrophobic look at warfare. Unlike typical Hollywood war movies, it doesn’t glorify combat; rather, it humanizes the crew, forcing you to empathize with them regardless of their uniform. Das Boot is seen as one of the greatest German films ever made and was nominated for six Academy Awards, including for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for director Wolfgang Petersen.
