 German chemical giant BASF is moving ahead with workforce cuts at its Alabama plant, affecting nearly 80 employees.The company filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, or WARN, notice this week indicating 79 employees at its McIntosh facility will be laid off beginning Sept. 30. The WARN filing follows BASF’s announcement in May that it would cease operating multiple production lines at the Washington County site by the end of the first quarter of 2027. At the time, the company said the move could affect about 100 employees, nearly half of the facility’s roughly 200-person workforce. The McIntosh facility produces specialty chemicals for BASF’s Performance Chemicals division, serving the plastics and automotive industries. Under the restructuring plan, the site will continue operating on a reduced footprint, with granulation activities, utilities and other site services remaining in place. “This step is in line with BASF’s ongoing commitment to operating its core businesses in a cost-efficient manner to remain competitive in a challenging market environment,” the company said in a statement.
