Join us for a talk with a local nonprofit dedicated to advancing reading and mathematical literacy through enrichment and intervention programs right here in Alabama:
Thursday, January 28, 2021
5:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. CST
ZOOM Webinar
In 2019-2020, Better Basics served nearly 22,000 students within the Central Alabama school districts! Their programs, which focus on underserved students in the Birmingham, Fairfield City, and Talladega County schools, touch more aspects in the child’s life than pure reading and math competencies. Students build confidence that impacts other areas of their lives. We will be joined by Dr. Kristi Bradford, Executive Director at Better Basics, as she tells us about the history of the 25-year-old organization, current and future plans/programs, impacts from the pandemic, and how motivated individuals can participate in their cause! Don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about local community involvement!
This event is hosted by AGP Young Professionals. Please make sure to register to receive the ZOOM link.
Es gibt’s Stammtisch, wie an jedem Donnerstag, ab halb acht Uhr abends im Giuseppes Café, 925 Eighth St. South, 324-2626.

Join us for recognition of International Holocaust Remembrance Day with our guest speaker Ann Mollengarden from the Birmingham Holocaust Education Center:
Thursday, February 4, 2021
6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Zoom Webinar
January 27th marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp. The United Nations General Assembly have designated this day as International Holocaust Remembrance Day, an annual day of commemoration to honor the victims of the Nazi era. The U.N. resolution that created International Holocaust Remembrance Day rejects denial of the Holocaust and condemns discrimination and violence based on religion or ethnicity.
Our guest speaker, Ann Mollengarden, has dedicated her life to educating others about the events of the Holocaust, and in particular, her father’s story as a Holocaust survivor. She has served as the Education Coordinator of the Birmingham Holocaust Education Center (BHEC) since its inception in 2002 and has traveled internationally to continue her studies.
Ann has compiled a 60-minute multi-media presentation, rich with historical detail and familial anecdotes that tells the story of Robert May and his family that lived in Camberg, Germany, just outside of Frankfurt.
Robert came from a Jewish family deeply entrenched in German culture. His relatives fought in the Franco-Prussian War and World War I. But when Hitler came to power and Robert was in the third grade, life abruptly changed. This is a story of the family. A family that stuck together and tried to endure. A family that was torn apart by the Nazi regime.
Don’t miss this important talk about Holocaust.
This presentation is kid/family-friendly.
