We’re excited about our Cullman Christkindlmarkt! A host of vendors will be set up German-style in small wooden tents, and it’s a great opportunity to wrap up all of your Christmas shopping!
An annual must-see at Christmas in Cullman is the Christmas pyramid. Known in German as Weihnachtspyramide, it’s traditional German decoration of wooden figures that represent different symbols and seasonal elements. Typically the pyramid is hung from the ceiling or set on a small table, but ours is over 30 feet tall and is the tallest one in the United States. The size tiers of the Cullman pyramid each feature different scenes, including one that will pay tribute to our local police and fire fighter departments. You can find the pyramid located next to the Cullman County Museum.

5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Carrigan’s Beer Garden, Birmingham
Come out to the network in casual settings. This is a great opportunity for German expats to meet and for other German speaking/practicing to improve your German. Speaking German is encouraged but not required.
Carrigan’s Beer Garden has a great selection of beverages and food for purchase. Family, kids, and dogs are allowed.
What does “Stammtisch” mean? A Stammtisch is an informal group meeting held on a regular basis, and also the usually large table around which the group meets. A Stammtisch is not a structured meeting, but rather a friendly and casual get-together.
Please note this is NOT an AGP event.

Much earlier than the Ken Burns documentary, Andrew Nagorski explored the lives and views of Americans who were in Germany in the 1920s and 1930s, how they witnessed the collapse of the Weimar Republic and the rise of Hitler. His book Hitlerland: American Eyewitnesses to the Nazi Rise to Power (Simon and Schuster, 2012) tapped a rich vein of personal testimonies to offer a fresh perspective on this heavily dissected era.
Nagorski was based in Germany, Poland, and Russia as a foreign correspondent for Newsweek, and he has written several acclaimed books about this nightmarish era. He will discuss the perspectives and experiences of American diplomats, journalists, entertainers, and an assortment of visitors, raising the larger question of what people saw and understood in the midst of those turbulent events. He will explain that the Americans were hardly alone in often misjudging events. Even Sigmund Freud, the subject of his new book, Saving Freud: The Rescuers Who Brought Him to Freedom, was slow to recognize the magnitude of the disaster in the making.
